You have a voice If you feel like you have a real voice whether that be in the industry as a whole, your office, or simply your team youll feel way more successful than any pay check can. Contributing and making a difference can make a big difference to your working life. If you feel like you have no impact, then youll never feel like you have much success. Youre challenged If you  second everyday in your  office bored out of your mind, 9 times out of 10 its because youre not being challenged enough in your role. Sometimes,  if youre not feeling challenged, you lose motivation and inspiration which is not a good sign. Youve created something new If youve created something new whether that be a product, an idea  or just a new  way of doing things then this is a definite sign of success. You receive outside praise Now this point is pretty obvious, but if external people/businesses are speaking highly of you to their network, you can guarantee that that certain project has been a success. You leave the office with a smile Most of all, your work should make you happy. If you leave the office every evening with a smile on your face, youre one of the lucky ones. Work should not only fill up your bank account but also fulfil your life in other ways. What do you think is a sign of success in your career? Let us know in the comments below. The Elevator Pitch Checklist - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

The Elevator Pitch Checklist - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A recent article of mine covered most people’s lack of efficacy in practicing their elevator pitches at job search networking meetings. I wanted to follow up on that and prove my tenets, so I brainstormed with a group of trusted associatesâ€"all of whom are in transitionâ€"and we came up with some “best practices.” Following are our findings. Based on this information, you’ll be able to rework your own pitch and then practice it when networking. I promise you’ll see results instantly. General Guidelines It’s most important to realize that different circumstances require different pitches. Otherwise, your elevator pitch will be perceived as canned and out of context. Make sure it’s memorable, because if it isn’t, you’ll simply sound like everyone else. Try introducing an element of surprise or some humor. The pitch has to be brief and to the point, so that people don’t tune you out. And it has to have a positive tone. No one’s interested in why you’re in transition. Content Announce your name at the beginning and again at the end. Make sure people hear you and get the name. If you say it fast the way we normally do, people won’t get it or be able to remember it. Following your name, identify your positionâ€"or the position you want to get. Create a point of reference for your roleâ€"for example, chief financial officer in a small company. Tone of Voice Here’s where you have to sound enthusiastic. Here the word sound has the literal meaning. A voice too loud or too soft won’t work. Also, some people speak faster than normal when under pressure. A normal speed is best. And voice modulation where appropriate increases likability and interest in you. Facial Expression and Body Language People judge others based on what they see, and most people have their own personal biases. However, it’s universally agreed that professional attire and an overall professional look are most helpful for promoting your own interest when networking. A genuine and broad smile means the same anywhere and in any language. Above all, make good eye contact with the audience, but don’t move your head like a panning security camera, either. Project positive body language by standing erect. Don’t shift your weight from leg to leg. In Summary Creating an effective 30-second elevator pitch is not as easy as it seems to be. In those 30 seconds, you need to introduce lots of content and then act it outâ€"a feat that for some is very difficult. But with some improvement and then several live repetitions, anyone can do it. Good luck. You’ll feel tremendously successful once people tell you how well you’ve done.

How to Have a Successful Career When Youre Feeling Broken -

How to Have a Successful Career When Youre Feeling Broken - Your career will fulfill a large part of your life, so when you’re feeling broken with every other aspect of it, the toll can impact your performance and confidence at work. Whether you’re suffering from depression or some other mental health condition, it’s important to your personal success to get clear on what’s holding you back, address it, and fix it as best you can. Here are some tips on identifying what ails you and getting yourself back on track to a successful career when youre feeling broken. Identify the Cause of Your Brokenness What’s wrong with me? Why do I feel this way? Why can’t I be happy? If these questions have ever been asked by your subconscious mind, you’re probably wondering where they come from and what’s causing such feelings. That very answer is what you need to find in order to remove the darkness that stands in the way of your career. Depression, anxiety, and low self-esteem are just a few examples of conditions that can make you feel “broken” or like nothing is working out. Depression: More common than you may think, depression affects about 6-7% of American adults and can range in severity from minor depressive episodes to crippling depression and suicidal ideations. This mental health condition can be addressed with therapy, medication, and a myriad of other techniques that lack the seal of approval by the scientific community. Symptoms include constant fatigue, sudden appetite changes or mood swings, pervasive sadness lasting more than a few weeks, among others. For a complete list, visit WebMD. Anxiety: Anxiety is a condition that causes racing thoughts, increased heart rate, nervousness or restlessness, and more. This condition can compound with other mental health conditions to form a crippling cocktail that can zap your motivation and take away the spunk from life and your career. Low Self-Esteem: Low self-esteem can be caused by many factors, whether it’s a condition like depression or anxiety, constant negative feedback, or trauma. This condition can hold you back from living your best life by making you doubt every move you make. This makes it incredibly difficult to focus and do well in your career. Other Factors: If none of these conditions apply to your situation, it’s a good idea to sit down and analyze what’s making you feel broken. Is it family members? Failed relationships? Goals you haven’t obtained? Once you identify the cause of your brokenness, you can properly address it; and the answer might just surprise you. Be Sure You’re in the Right Career When we hear “career”, we think the real deal, the end game. Your career is supposed to be the final job, the last position you’ll hold; one in which you can grow, excel, and be happy. But regardless of the definition of a career, 85% of Americans are still unhappy at work. That’s eighty-five percent. Let that sink in for a moment. Think about how much time you spend at work, how much energy goes into your work, and what having a successful career means to you. Having the right career can mean the difference between a lifetime of happiness and fulfillment and a lifetime of unfulfilled dreams and misery. When you’re analyzing what’s causing your brokenness, don’t leave out your career. Are you happy with it? Is it what you’ve always wanted to do? What would you like to see changed, and do you have the power to change it? The short answer is that yes, you absolutely have the power to make any changes you want. You’re only ever one big decision away from an entirely different life! Making a change in careers is certainly scary.   But when you weigh the negative effects of an unhappy life against the risk of choosing a new, more fulfilling careerthe results speak for themselves. Feeling Broken? Get Help! Sometimes, you just can’t’ do everything on your own, and that’s ok! There exist mental health resources, support groups, and much more that are available to help you identify what’s holding you back and what steps you need to take to fix it. There’s no shame in asking for help when you need it, and you deserve to be happy in life. Work fulfills so much of your life’s goals, so you should at the very least be happy with your career. If you’re feeling overwhelmed, try talking with a therapist or visiting a support group. Focus resources on improving your current career.   Or, if you want to switch jobs, start building the necessary skills to acquire the job that will make you happy. Happiness can’t be bought.   But when you feel broken, the best thing to do is look for the very thing that will make you happy.

The perks to graduate jobs in Manchester

The perks to graduate jobs in Manchester If you’re looking for a graduate job you’re probably feeling the pressure to head to the capital right now.   It seems to be the ‘it’ place for graduate living, and if you ignore the sky high rent prices and congested public transport system, it is a great place to be. But what if you could have all the perks without the stress and empty bank account? Cue, Manchester. “Manchester’s got everything except a beach”. In the wise words of Stone Roses frontman Ian Brown, the city really does offer its inhabitants the best of all worlds. It’s a thriving metropolitan hub, attracting huge investment and the growth of jobs, while also boasting a first-class cultural scene, excellent transport links and gorgeous surrounding countryside, all at an affordable price. If you enjoy building sandcastles in your spare time, you might want to look elsewhere though. But dont worry, if your knowledge of Manchester doesn’t extend much further than Oasis, Coronation Street and its famous footballers read on. We have the top 6 perks to working a graduate job in Manchester. The food is amazing If you’re anything like me, then food is a defining factor in pretty much anything I do. I only consent to a shopping trip on the promise of a big lunch in the middle of it to ease the pain. So if your life revolves around your foodie impulses, then Manchester is your dream city. It may not have a Michelin star, but over the past five years the amount of eateries in the city has increased by 48%, one of the highest rates of growth anywhere in the UK. You have everything from the upmarket and eclectic Rabbit in the Moon to the Indian streetfood-inspired Bundobust. You’ll also be able to take a wander down Curry Mile, the largest concentration of South Asian restaurants outside the Indian subcontinent. If you prefer American food, then Manchester is home to the legendary Almost Famous burgers. Their Blame it on the Vodka burger is a force to be reckoned with. You get to enjoy world class culture If youre easily, there’s always something going on in Manchester to keep you entertained. Last month saw the biennial Manchester International Festival, a world-class celebration of diverse new work across a range of different art forms. All year round you can head to HOME, a centre for international art, theatre and film â€" and sip cocktails while watching the latest films. You can also head to the award-winning Whitworth Art Gallery â€" awarded museum of the year in 2015 or the Museum of Science and Industry if that’s more up your street. Whatever you enjoy doing in your spare time, Manchester has the cultural output to satisfy your interests. You’ll have money London is great, but your bank account depletes so rapidly it can feel like you’re getting charged just for breathing. In contrast, the cost of living in Manchester is 30% cheaper, particularly for transport and accommodation.  Even more importantly, a pint of beer in London is on average £1 more expensive than Manchester. So if you want to keep your pennies in your pocket, you can’t do much better than a Northern city like Manchester. The music scene is world class The birthplace of Oasis, The Smiths and Joy Division, no one can deny that Manchester has earned its place in the music hall of fame. It’s flock of music venues, ranging from the Manchester Arena to The Apollo to Night and Day café, still host world-renowned acts as well those just starting out (And tickets are often much cheaper than London venues). Your Instagram will be on point Doing it for the ‘gram. Or that’s what most people seem to be doing these days. If you enjoy eating avocado on toast, surrounded by urban street art and stacks of vinyl records, then you’ll be right at home in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. Joking aside, the Northern Quarter is Manchester’s answer to East London, home to wide array of independent shops, cafes and bars. Affleck’s Palace is a must-see, a vast emporium of curious oddities and indie merchandise. And thanks in part to the Outhouse Project, the area is decorated with some of the most stunning street art you’ll see in the UK. Job prospects are good This is all very well and good, but if the job opportunities aren’t available it doesn’t count for much. Well, have no fear. Manchester might not have a job market as large as London’s but it is expanding rapidly and attracting the investment and attention of large corporations. The city has one of the fastest growing job rates in the country and research has shown large companies are increasingly turning away from the capital and choosing to invest elsewhere, with Manchester top of the list. The city saw 14,000 new jobs in the professional services between 2010-15, and is also home to Media City and Manchester Science Park. From media to technology, Manchester is increasingly becoming a hub for jobs and industry development, and often without the same level of competition you would see in London. The Year Of Nailing Your Content Marketing Strategy

The Year Of Nailing Your Content Marketing Strategy The single most dominant change in marketing for all businesses over the last few years has undoubtedly been the shift away from traditional, soapbox style tactics to the new content marketing model. Its revolutionised the way business operate and how they speak to their customers. But the ‘content is king’ approach means that businesses are under relentless pressure to deliver fresh, exciting and personalised content to keep their audience onside. There is always someone else fighting for share of voice and relevancy, and for startups who are usually understaffed, meeting those conditions can be a struggle. Not only is there pressure to achieve a great return on investment, there is also a pressure to make eye catching videos, insightful blog posts and more. Thats why drafting a content marketing strategy is a hugely important move for any small business. Mastering Your Strategy Content works best when approached in a consistent manner that helps to establish your brand identity, and when there are clear aims for its production. Creating articles, white papers, podcasts and infographics is only really worthwhile when you have a defined audience, youve taken the time to map out goals for your content and you know that the topics youre covering are truly of interest and will enhance customer experience tor help to build a relationship in some way. Collaboration Is Key For content to be truly successful, it also needs to be seamless. That means a high degree of collaboration between IT support, creatives or marketing staff and management. Often this is far easier to achieve in small businesses who will typically have a greater flexibility in individual role remit and necessarily more of an all hands on deck approach. In larger organisations, such functions can typically become quite siloed and this can be hard to overcome. Content is everyones responsibility from the Web designers optimising pages for the newly generated traffic to flow through to the managing directors blogging about their day or the product sales team shooting a video on their new item. Where great content is found, it doesnt happen purely from the efforts of one team everyone within the organisation needs to understand the value and purpose of pursuing a content management strategy. This strategy starts from the top, as it must be aligned with the vision, values and direction of travel of the business as a whole. If not, not only will it never have the authenticity that audiences demand, but it wont be delivering the results that your business needs to support its wider goals. This can be fairly tough to achieve when set against the quite relentless pace that good content creation demands. Social media never sleeps, trending topics are constantly popping up and brands need to manage their output carefully in order to stay relevant. The key to keeping pace can only be relentless organisation creating and sticking to a schedule, maintaining a constant pipeline of ideas and also having the software to enable to to deliver from a robust CRM system which can give you a more data driven approach to what content needs to be planned in, to email marketing software which allows you to segment your customer base effectively and target the right people with what you produce, through to tools such as Hootsuite which allow you to preplan the promotion of your conte nt and even industry specific support software such as legal files case management or responsive product pricing tools anything which helps to organise the workload and support a data led approach. Connecting The Dots Networked thinking is something which companies often struggle to attain,  but its absolutely vital to sustain the pace at which good content creation needs to take place. Not only that, but content has to fit into the overall strategy of the business and support its aims and it cannot do this as an island. Marketing teams must be properly supported with a connected approach and connected tools to craft insightful and on target content. Technology needs to be integrated to properly support this aim. Often businesses can have a situation with a bunch of legacy programmes and software which dont communicate with each other or are ‘owned’ by different departments and this makes the job extremely difficult. Failed outreach campaigns, mismanaged email lists which breach data regulations and dead end links or poorly designed landing pages are the result of this and mean that all the effort to produce great content falls flat. If there is little understanding across all teams of the nee d for a joined up approach with people and systems and a lack of commitment towards controlling the problem, then the pieces your business has gone to a lot of trouble to produce will not drive results no matter how much they resonate with the audience, and internally you are likely to come across many complaints about the proportion of time taken to create the content versus the results its delivering. Demonstrate The Value Its a little bit chicken and egg but sometimes the situation can be easier when marketers are able to demonstrate the effectiveness of producing great content. This starts with connecting to different departments to align the aims of marketing with those or other areas of the business to create the correct goals for the marketing work. Then it continues when a proper feedback loop is put in place to ensure that insights and learnings from different teams are shared and woven into the messaging and approach of the content. A strong demonstration of return on investment can also convince those who may be initially reluctant to engage in the approach and make them realise that this approach, which can often seem very ‘soft’ when set up against the hard metrics of sales targets can actually translate directly into enhanced profits. When new software platforms or work to integrate legacy systems is needed, its then far easier to demonstrate why that investment needs to be prioritised when it can be shown in alignment with wider business goals and as a profit driver rather than a drain. Be Driven By Data As much as content marketing cannot work in isolation as a function of the marketing team, it also needs to be supported by smart data decisions. There is a need to tell great stories but they have to be ones which connect with the audience and tell them wavy they want to hear. Youll find this out through careful attention to your customer data. Tracing the customer journey is hugely informative and will show you which touch points and interactions the customer has had with you. Identify the key data points and it can really help you to shape your content strategy and drive the direction you go in. Algorithms will continue to develop to the point that they get super intelligent about suggesting tends and come up with relevant content based on big data patterns of consumption and the goals of your business. How To Nail Your Process Key Takeaways Do some competitor analysis If youve been patchy with content marketing so far, spotting odd bits here and there but never being consistent and not managing to achieve the reach that you need to, then its time to go back to the drawing board. Take a look at what your competitors are up to both immediate competitors and aspirational ones. What does their content look like? How often are they posting? What sentiment are they generating? SimilarWeb is a tool which can really help you to see how your equivalents blog posts and other content is really performing and this gives you a sense of what you do and dont want to do. Of course, its not wise to simply copy your audience can smell inauthentic content a mile off. You need to find your own style and tone of voice. Content needs to be fresh and original to achieve its full potential. Research your audience If you dont have a clear idea of who youre talking to, you wont be able to create content responsive to their needs. Understand your audience truly and youll be able to produce videos and articles that speak their language and are likely to be highly successful as youll know exactly what to post, and when and where to post it. Define your goals Knowing what you want your content to achieve is half the battle. Good data should inform you as to what is possible, but make sure you also understand what social media success looks like in your industry. Depending on the industry you operate in, the parameters of success will be a little different. Tap in your project team As content has to be the aim of the business as a whole, depending on the size of your operations you may need to tap in lots of different teams to support your strategy. The content youre aiming to create and the budget you have available will dictate the shape of this team, but it may involve web developers, copywriters, external agencies, SEO specialists, media bookers, sales or even technical staff that havent traditionally been involved in marketing work. Make sure everyone is clear on the aims and the scope of the project. Lay down a schedule To have an impact and build on your gains you need a consistent schedule for production and publishing at the heart of your strategy. Pencil in regular ideas meetings to help you define audience needs, topics of interest which are coming up, whats trending and what you need to promote. Having this committed to paper doesnt mean that you cant adapt as you go along but it does mean that you wont be scrabbling around for content, going long gaps without publishing anything or missing promoting key messages. Establish your feedback loop Finally, now that you have your metrics, you must ensure that you close the feedback loop by understanding how your content has performed and being able to become responsive to the picture that your analytics are showing you. Tracking results shouldnt be done as an academic exercise you need to use your findings to improve as you go along and as things change over time with what your audience responds to. Content marketing is easy to get into but harder to be truly good at it takes skill to accurately draw all the threads of a campaign together and hit on a winning formula. But its all about trial and error, so dont be afraid to try new things. With your process, your research and your data in place, you can create the ideal plan for your customers and reap the rewards.

Inspirational Quote - Hallie Crawford

Inspirational Quote A friend sent this to me last week. Interesting is a nice way of saying it right ?? Challenges are what makes life interesting; overcoming them is what makes life meaningful. Josh J. Marine Remember to turn your issues or worries into challenges or problems to be solved instead of mulling over them ad nauseum. Worrying doesnt help. And we tend to worry about the wrong things anyway. When youre worrying, ask yourself What do I need to do about this? Then get cracking on it. Happy Monday, Hallie career consulting Inspirational Quote This quote is a little sassy and in your face…I like that Dont take yourself so seriously. No one else does. I chose this because Ive been thinking lately about not getting so worked up about the little things. I can get upset about little frustrations, just like anyone else does. But when I look back on these issues a week later, even just a few hours later sometimes, I wonder why I got so worked up. What good does getting worked up do? Not a whole lot to be honest. And I realize that often, I just need to take myself less seriously and remember that things will work out. They almost always do. So where do you take yourself too seriously? And how can you lighten up a little, realizing that in the scheme of things, these small things dont matter so much anyway? Happy Monday! Career Coach Hallie Inspirational Quote This quote is from a card that one of my clients, Katie Johnson, sent to me last week. It truly made my day! It is such an accurate statement about coaching, and why I am passionate about what I do. I wanted to share it with you… Most people dont know there are angels whose only job is to make sure you dont get too comfortable and fall asleep and miss your life. Where are you falling asleep and getting too comfortable? Make a change today, dont wait. You dont want to miss your life. Contact me, Im here to help. Related links: The greatest risk Career Seekers teleclass Career Coach Inspirational Quote I really like this one…We can always learn from our challenges. Lifes challenges are not supposed to paralyze you, theyre supposed to help you discover who you are. Bernice Johnson Reagon Ask yourself these questions this week: What have you been struggling with lately? What have you learned about yourself as a result? If your challenge is feeling lost without direction, if youre having trouble finding a career you truly enjoy, or youre not sure what the next step is for you in your life, take a step towards taking charge of your life by giving me a call. This is what I do best. Happy Monday! Career Counseling Inspirational Quote Self-trust is the essence of heroism. Ralph Waldo Emerson I first read this quote at the Martin Luther King Center here in Atlanta. Trusting myself and my instincts was something I was struggling with at the time so it hit me like a brick. (In a good way of course :)) Theres a mental image in my mind of how it felt to stand there and read that, where it was located in the museum, and what the quote looked like. Arent life-altering events always like that?! We can remember every detail of those but sometimes forget our home phone number. MLK was a hero. He trusted his instincts. On top of that, he was courageous enough to express his beliefs and take a stand for them. Today and this week I encourage you to follow his example in your own way. Do you trust yourself? Take a moment to think about this…and be honest. My journey to self-trust (which continues today) began with learning who I am, what my values and priorities are, and accepting myself with all my imperfections. Becoming clear about what is important to me in life enabled me to make clearer decisions, and trust those decisions. The more Ive learned to listen to my intuition and trust it, the smoother things have gone for me. Im here to help you do the same-identify your priorities, know what you want your life and career to be about, and listen to your intuition. I am passionate about doing so because Ive been there. I know how it feels to be lost and not trust myself. Feel free to read more about the Unlocking Your Purpose teleclass coming up next week. Years ago it helped me learn to trust myself and gain clarity about who I was and what I wanted in life. Im grateful to be able to lead this class myself now, because of how life-changing it was for me. Warmly, Hallie Career Transition Coach Inspirational Quote In a recent blog post I asked, “What is the impact you have on those in your life? And what’s the impact you want to have?” I think this inspirational quote answers that question for all of us: “Be the person you want others to see you as.” Sometimes we need to be reminded that life isn’t all about doing … doing … doing. It’s important to just “be.” Enjoy the journey! Have fun! Take risks! Be the person you want to be! When you become the person you want to be, you are much more likely to achieve your goals. Why? Because you are more in alignment with the things you really want in life. We are integrated beings, so everything affects everything. As you prepare for 2007, ask yourself: Who is the person I really want to be? What is the purpose and mission statement for my life? What are the traits in me that I would like to cultivate? What are the habits I would rather leave behind? How can I commit to being that person? Let me help you in this experience of discovering who you want to be. Join me in my Unlocking Your Purpose teleclass, or contact me for one-on-one coaching. Career Testing Coach, Inspirational Quote Happy Monday everyone! How was your St. Pattys Day? Ours was lovely. We went to an outdoor festival and I stayed out longer than I have in a while. (I tend to have a short attention span with these things.) The outdoor party was fun except there was a chilly breeze blowing through Piedmont Park here in the A-T-L. I was flattered to be mentioned in the Brazen Careerist Coachology: Creating a path through your twenties. For you young adults out there, she has some good tips for creating a path through your twenties so check it out. Iv decided this week, and some of next week, is going to be small business owner week. Many of my clients go on to be entrepreneurs in some capacity, whether its full time or part time. Id like to share some of the people and products I have found to be incredibly useful in growing my small business. So enjoy, and I hope these are helpful! Personal Note: By the way, many more of you are commenting on my posts. I appreciate that. One of my goals with this blog is to have it be one of the best career-resources on the web. So feel free to let me know what else youd like to see here or learn about. Finally, heres your Inspirational Quote for the week: No one is in charge of your happiness except you. Hallie
