Successful Strategic Planning Ideas

Successful Strategic Planning IdeasSuccessful Strategic Planning IdeasStrategic planning for organizations is not considered fun. Strategic planning is often done under duress because it is required. Strategic planning is important, yet many such plans are found on bookcases, not on the desktops being used. Done well, a strategic plan provides a useful focus that energizes and moves the organization toward its mission goals, plus it provides a document to recruit others to the mission. In short, a strategic plan is a valuable guide to focus time, talent, and resources in running a successful enterprise. A Better Way to Accomplish Strategic Planning How do we plan vacations? We read travel brochures and magazines to imagine fun places to visit. We invest energy in the process of planning a vacation. Wheres the energy in strategic planning? The creative step that envisions possibilities and generates energy is generally missing. To think before planning is a logical one, yet most s trategic planning processes devote insufficient think time prior to planning. The desire to get a strategic plan completed quickly relegates thinking to filling in blanks on work sheets. Instead, when key stakeholders are invited to a creative thinking step, it engages and energizes all participants. This is where new ideas are generated, where innovative possibilities are visualized, and where the stage is set for implementation success. The mora stakeholders are involved in the thinking and exploration, the more emotional and intellectual energy they have invested, and the higher the probability that implementation will occur successfully. Strategic Thinking and Exploration A strategic plan should not be solely an incremental list of current activities, but have at least a 20% ah ha factor of new ideas. Otherwise, a linear, incremental plan will do little more than maintain the status quo, like treading water. With this premise, the pre-strategic planning stages need to includ e creative and innovative thinking. This stage should be one of exploring possibilities without constraint, a stimulating and enjoyable part of planning. Thus, think new ideas, explore them, and align them with the purpose of the organization. Think Questions at this first stage of strategic thinking should be expansive, akin to brainstorming ideas, yet focused around the following Where is the industry or business heading? What do customers want or need next year and beyond? Using creative thinking methods, the team should consider all manner of ideas, including crazy ones. Here is one sequence of questions to ask What are the trends in the industry or business sector?Given the trends, what are three new ideas you can add to your best product/services?Given the trends, what products or services should you change or eliminate?Given the trends, what new products or services should you consider? Explore For each set of ideas, expand them and explore their potential to position your or ganization at a new plateau of success. During this stage, it is important to avoid discussing the feasibility or cost of an idea. Continue the brainstorming mode. Constraints will be considered in the planning stage. Here are some questions for exploring ideas What criteria should you use to decide a good from a great idea?If implemented, which ideas will distinguish yours from other businesses? If you take action on any specific idea, what will be the impact (both positive and negative) for taking action? What if no action is taken? Any impact? What could add at least 20% more value to ones current products and services? The 20% is somewhat arbitrary. plattl a number. How much change is expected in the business environment the next 12 months? The goal is to continue to grow to at least keep up with the shifting competitive environment. Strategic Planning The Tactical Segment Thinking and exploration might be considered the strategic segment while the planning stage is the tacti cal segment. During the planning stage, the realities of funding and resource constraints are brought to bear in selecting the best ideas for the plan. It is here that decision-making tools, based on desired criteria, are used to select options for the final strategic plan. For example, criteria can be cost to set up,time required to complete the new service offering, fit with current products and services, andpotential for growth and profitability. In planning, the traditional steps come into play, to include analyzing strengths and weaknesses, opportunities and threats (SWOT), competition, and available resources. These latter aspects further guide the decision making, providing a different set of constraints. Note that many of the opportunities in the SWOT will have been considered in the think and explore stage. Here are some questions for this stage Which of the ideas fit your mission immediately, short term, and long term? What are the time, talent, and resource requirements for the ideas?Which of the ideas have the highest return-on-investment once implemented? What does one have to do to implement the plan, as it pertains to people, skills, technology, and funds? Final Useful Thoughts About Strategic Planning and Strategic Plans Consider three interlocking rings of who you are (strengths and weaknesses), what the customer wants (opportunities and threats), and what you stand for (purpose and mission). The central intersection created by these three rings will reveal the unique opportunities that only your circumstance can offer. This distinctive intersection might be called your fit, where no other organization has the same conditions. Dont lose this potential to differentiate from the competition. In reality, strategic planning is a means to find your unique fit. If you consider a strategic plan merely a working guideand not a formal document for presentation requiring perfected details, then there is a higher probability for successful implementatio n. The Plane Crash That Killed Reba McEntires Band

The Plane Crash That Killed Reba McEntires BandThe Plane Crash That Killed Reba McEntires BandAny plane crash involving a celebrity naturally gains a lot of attention from the media, and the 1991 plane crash that killed eight of Reba McEntires band membersis no different. This plane crash should serve as a warning for pilots everywhere regarding a number of topics, including departure procedures, night flying hazards, controlled flight into terrain, evaluating risk, VFR/IFR clearances, and the role of flight tafelgeschirr specialists in offering pilots guidance and advice about the flight. Details of the McEntire Band Plane Crash According to the NTSB accident report, the Hawker Siddeley DH.125-1A/52 aircraft (an older version of the Hawker 800) crashed into a mountain after takeoff from Brown Field Municipal Airport on March 16, 1991. The two pilots and eight passengers on board were killed. The flight welches to be operated on an instrument flight plan from Brown Field, located j ust outside of San Diegos Class B airspace, to Amarillo, Texas, which would serve as a fuel stop before continuing. The pilot spoke to the flight service specialist three times in an effort to figure out how to best depart the airport. During the first conversation with the flight service specialist, the pilot filed an IFR flight plan. It was about 1120 p.m. local time, and the pilot asked about departing the airport under VFR and picking up his IFR clearance once airborne. The briefer asked the pilot if he was familiar with the departure procedure, and the pilot said, No, not really. The flight service specialist then attempted to look up the departure procedures in order to relay the information to the pilot, and there was some confusion about where to locate the procedures. At about 1153 p.m. the pilot called the flight service specialist again and reported that he wasnt able to find the standard instrument departure procedure referred to by the specialist. During the conversatio n, the procedures were read to the pilot. The pilot stated that was all he needed and the phone call ended. The pilot called a third time at 1228 a.m. and questioned the use of an IFR departure procedure that would take him into the Class B airspace boundary without a Class B clearance. During the last phone call, the pilot questioned the specialist about that procedure, reminding him that he intended to depart VFR and suggesting that he should probably just depart to the northeast and stay VFR below 3,000 feet. The briefer agreed. Complications During the Flight Neither the flight service specialist nor the pilot took into consideration the rising terrain east of the airport, and neither of them noted that the minimum sector altitude (MSA) east of the airfield, in the direction of departure, was 7,600 feet - well above the 3,000-foot altitude that the pilot chose to fly. The VFR minimum safe altitude for that particular sector was 6,900 feet. The plane departed at 141 a.m. The weather at a nearby airport was reported to be clear, visibility was at least 10 miles, and winds were calm. Just one minute after takeoff, the aircraft contacted the approach control facility to request his IFR clearance and was told that his clearance had clocked out, but to stand by and the controller would put it back in the system. The airplane crashed into the San Isidro Mountains at an elevation of about 3,300 feet just moments after being assigned a squawk code by ATC. The peak of the mountain range, according to the VFR sectional, sits at about 3,550 feet. Investigation of the Crash According to investigators, the airplanes wing hit the top of the mountain, and it cartwheeled multiple times, scattering wreckage over a wide area. The NTSB report found the probable cause of the accident to be Improper planning/decision by the pilot, the pilots failure to maintain proper altitude and clearance over mountainous terrain, and the copilots failure to adequately monitor the pro gress of the flight. Factors related to the accident were insufficient terrain information provided by the flight service specialist during the preflight briefing after the pilot inquired about a low altitude departure, darkness, mountainous terrain, both pilots lack of familiarity with the geographical area, and the copilots lack of familiarity with the aircraft. This accident is a cautionary tale for all pilots to be vigilant when departing either VFR or IFR at night, especially in unfamiliar territory. The crash may have been prevented had these pilots received an IFR clearance on the ground, or looked at the minimum sector altitude (MSA) on an IFR approach or departure chart or a VFR chart.

Why Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most Women

Why Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most Women Why Work-Life Balance Sucks for Most Women Tired of the hearing the term work-life balance? Many women are. The term was coined to identify the conflicting demands women face. It was probably invented by women or a woman who wanted to get a message out: we cannot do it all. In that regard, the term is somewhat sexist because it was not targeted at, or identified with men. When was the last time you heard a man say he needed a better balance in his life to take the kids to the park? And, why dont men seek more balance in their lives? If they were to pitch in more with chores and child-rearing, women might not be stretched so thin. The truth is, we live in a changing society where men, in fact, helping out than they did fifty years ago. There are more single dads today than even twenty years ago (single dads not due to being widowed.) Men are slowly becoming more openly nurturing and supportive of wives who want to go back to school. But this is done quietly, household by household - society at large has yet to accept that men are contributing more. Still, women continue to struggle with what is expected of them - or what they think is expected of them. Women strive to be super wives, super moms, and career women. All the while, they stress about getting older, gaining weight, and competing with younger women in the workforce. The Term Work-Life Balance Does Not Identify What Many Women Need The phrase work-life balance conjures up an image of a scale (something women are often at war with anyhow) with work on one side and family and/or other personal relationships on the other. In the middle is the woman with both arms extended trying to balance everything. The woman represents the stabilizer caught in the middle being divided her life into two parts - where she feels she should be and where society says she should be. But a woman is a whole being and the focus should be on her as a whole being and not on just two (important) aspects of her life. The this or that definition of work-life seeks to define women as servants in two entirely separate roles: workers or caretakers. Women perform these (and many other) roles but they should not be made to represent the embodiment of these roles. Work-life balance has been sold to women as being the key to happiness by suggesting all we need to do is to simply find a way to better fill our roles without going crazy. The bottom line message being (unfairly) sold to women is that if we would only prioritize our work lives better we would have more time to spend with friends, family, and on ourselves. The trouble is, accomplishing more personal time requires a significant amount of work and the term balance becomes moot. Very few people can or would want to spend half their time working and half their time not working. There are plenty of women who do not have a job outside the home that need more balance in their lives. And, what about the career women who love their work so that trying to add more time (balance) baking cookies at home would be to their detriment? The very term work-life balance implies that there is a balance to be had in the first place (there is not) and if we do not have it something is wrong with us. Work-life balance is just one more task for women to try and find time to tend to; one more thing on our long to do list to fail and feel bad about not accomplishing in a day. To think we can achieve better work life balance by simply being more prioritized, better organized, or by trying harder, is foolishness at best.

How to Think Like a Pioneer when Hiring Pioneers

How to Think Like a Pioneer when Hiring Pioneers How to Think Like a Pioneer when Hiring Pioneers “To boldly go where no one has gone before.” You may recognize that quote from the opening of “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” While it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be hiring spaceship captains anytime soon, hiring for a position that is the first of its kind at a company can feel like being on the Starship Enterprise with its mission “to explore strange new worlds.” When a position comes across your desk in a new field- one you have not had to fill before- what can you do to make the process easier? You may be skilled at filling customer service, sales or engineering positions, but filling positions in new fields such as data science, user experience design or artificial intelligence presents a challenge that requires the same pioneering approach you want your top candidates to have. Here’s how to get started: 1. Research existing positions in the field   According to Terra Winston, principal of Interract Consulting, “What’s new to you is probably not brand new to the world.” Winston emphasized the importance of networking in addition to online research. “Talk to other recruiters and people in the field,” she said, “and ask about red flags, fluff answers and how to probe.” There’s no need for you to be a lone ranger even if the person you’re hiring for may be a lone ranger- an “ambassador of the strange new world to the company,” as Winston called such employees. 2. Create a realistic job description   “In an ideal world,” said Kristy Stromberg, vice president of marketing at Simply Hired, “the recruiter would be a strategic thought partner to the hiring manager.” The job description is where you have the opportunity to make your job of filling the position easier and to help the company move forward in this new field. Stromberg emphasized the importance of identifying transferable skills from specific fields.   “Back when I had to build out my first digital marketing team, we identified fields in which we could find candidates with strong analytical backgrounds,” she said.   Instead hunting for the very few current experts in the new field, cast a wider net by searching for transferrable skills, list them in the job description and look for candidates with applicable business backgrounds. Use your knowledge of the skills required by positions in existing fields to guide the hiring manager in determining which skills apply to the new position.   In addition to identifying transferable skills, clarify the non-negotiable requirements for the position with the hiring manager before recruiting. Which technical skills are a must? This is where your research also plays a role. Winston cited an example of a job description that asked for six years of experience in a programming language that had only existed for four years. A quick search online will help you create accurate requirements for obscure technical skills. 3. Look for learning agility and leadership ability   “Hiring people in new fields is different in the sense that because it’s a new role, training can be somewhat difficult,” said Avni Shah, lead recruiter at Simply Hired. Shah noted that other team members usually train new hires, but with new roles “you’re basically relying on a person’s ability to lead their own training.”   Hire people who learn as they go and will act as ambassadors of their functions to the rest of the company. Winston mentioned that hiring existing “genius” experts- particularly those with academic backgrounds- can be risky if they don’t know how to translate the value of their work back to the business objectives and evangelize it to the larger team.   A combination of behavioral- and scenario-based interviewing techniques are necessary to see how the person will work with the team, how they deal with challenges and how they would go about solving business problems.   “You want to know what their vision is and how they imagine this new function will help your business because you don’t know either,” Winston said.   Like any hire, hiring for a new role is a gamble, but in this case you’re gambling on their ability to build something that you may not have the ability to evaluate. Use your research to help the hiring manager determine what success will look like.   Five or ten years from now that person you hired for an obscure job in a new field could be leading a whole team of experienced experts. Every new position is an opportunity to help the company grow. While it may not look like Starship Enterprise, that so-called new world will become the old world soon enough. 13 Reasons Why showrunners remove graphic suicide scene

'13 Reasons Why' showrunners remove graphic suicide scene '13 Reasons Why' showrunners remove graphic suicide scene Whatever side of the fence you fall on in regards to the admittedly strange circumstances surrounding the death of Kurt Cobain, few could argue against its inimical impact- one effectively demonstrated in Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon’s Preacher series.   The graphic novel features a character named Eugene Root, later called Arseface after a botched attempt to pay homage to the late Nirvana frontman, leaves him both alive and horribly disfigured. The poetry of self-slaughter is often celebrated in reference to the works of William Shakespeare. The 13 notable suicides present in his plays,   Brutus (Julius Caesar), Cassius (Julius Caesar) Cleopatra (Antony and Cleopatra) Charmian (Antony and Cleopatra) Goneril (King Lear) Juliet (Romeo and Juliet) Lady Macbeth (Macbeth), Ophelia (Hamlet) Othello (Othello)  Mark Antony (Antony and Cleopatra) and Portia (Julius Caesar)  are all consequenced by shame and despair. However, unlike the model evidenced by Cobain, Wallace, and Hemmingway,   t hey are not framed with the too gifted for this world motif. I think the late post-impressionist painter Vincent Van Gogh introduced the kind of voluntary march to the maggots that is most compelling to the current generation.Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Conflicting reports shadow the details of the dutchman’s death, just like Cobain’s, and the archetype that links them are toxic in the same way. To a lesser degree perhaps, Cobain suffered a perpetual state of anguish and his solution to this has been echoing for twenty-five years. What was likely a panicked retreat to him, was a lyrical farewell to the rest of the world: True genuises don’t stick around.Similarly, Van Gogh’s posthumous success retconed the society that did not understand him as villainous short-sighted fools. These results are particularly attractive to teens and adolescents, a period defined b y an appetite for attention.  Recently Ladders reported on the unfortunate spike in suicide rates among this very demographic after the release of the popular Netflix series, 13 Reasons Why.Kyle Schnitzer of Ladders wrote,  â€œResearch published in the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry said there was nearly a 30% increase in suicide among America’s youth - ages 10-17 - in the month that followed the show’s first episode, which aired on March 2017.”The show’s plot revolves around a high school student named Clay after he discovers seven cassette recordings left by his friend and unrequited love, Hannah following her suicide. Each tape corresponds with a different person that contributed to Hannah’s death.  The story is set in motion by a three-minute-long sequence depicting the young woman’s suicide in graphic detail. This inclusion of this scene intended to demonstrate the tragedy and horror of Hannah’s decision to its full potential in the hopes that young viewers would be deterred from emulating it. Unfortunately, a series of studies suggested the contrary, urging the showrunners to respond with the following:“As we ready to launch Season 3, we have heard concerns about the scene from Dr. Christine Moutier at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and others, and have agreed with Netflix to re-edit it. No one scene is more important than the life of the show, and its message that we must take better care of each other. We believe this edit will help the show do the most good for the most people while mitigating any risk for especially vulnerable young viewers.”While it is by no means the job of an author to have our well being in mind while determining the beats that best articulate their work, the premise of 13 Reasons Why  represents why the allure of suicidal ideation is so persuasive to young people. The appeal for many has to do with the notion that when we’re gone, the party sort of stops, w hile the attendants gather to make sense of it all. Moreover, it puts the potential of our legacy on ice. While you all prepare to spend the rest of your lives wondering whether or not I would have been the next Orwell, I’ll be at the rickety stool store, drafting my note. The truth of the matter is, however strong the temptation is to lionize the dead, it will always cow to an alliance of grief and betrayal, time will make sure of this. That isn’t to say that the pitch is always possible to reject or even always selfish to consider.Netflix and the showrunners made the right decision to remove Hannah’s controversial suicide scene but if it’s on the authors to be mindful of the impact of their work, it’s on us consumers to be mindful of the caution in cautionary tales.

Join the Twitter Conversation about HR Best Practices

Join the Twitter Conversation about HR Best Practices Join the Twitter Conversation about HR Best Practices Join the Twitter Conversation about HR Best Practices Charney, Social Media Engagement Manager Twitter, the popular micro blogging site that limits users to messages of 140 characters or less, has catapulted from the margins to the mainstream. Major brands, spanning the gamut from entertainment to consumer packaged goods to professional services, have built both a presence and a following within Twitter, creating a diverse, cross-functional pipeline where instant engagement is as easy as pressing Enter. While many feel Twitters ubiquity might be as brief as its character limits, consider: While it still only commands less than 2% of social media market share, Twitter usage soared 1170% year-to-year, according to recent data from Hitwise. Language trending firm The Global Language Monitor recently named Twitter the most popular word in the English language in 2009, displacing Obama. The majority of Twitter users are not teens or college students, but rather working adults. Almost 42% of the sites audiences are age 35-49, according to Nielsen, with 62% of users accessing the site exclusively from their office. Social media-savvy HR and recruiters bloggers arealready using Twitter and while job seekers increasingly turn to Twitter to create connections, network and find opportunities, employers are following suit. The result: a multi-faceted, real-time conversation about the business of hiring. How Twitter is Evolving Hiring and HR Twitter has quickly evolved into an invaluable tool for hiring experts and decision makers to engage both candidates and each other.Human resource professionals and hiring managers are turning to Twitter, primarily as a means to monitor and engage their employee populations, keep followers informed about their respective employment brands, as well as perform due diligence on potential new hires. Twitters status bar prompts users a simple question: What are you doing? For Human resource and employment professionals not currently engaging this valuable resource, the more pressing question becomes, What are you thinking? Learn to Manage Your Twitter Account Due to its limited in-site search functionality and scant biographical information, finding relevant professionals to follow can prove as challenging as finding a top passive candidate for a hard-to-fill requisition. In fact, many report the inability to target relevant results as a main barrier of entry to Twitter adoption. Realizing the breakneck pace at which Human resource and hiring professionals work, the blessing of Twitters inherent real-time status and engagement can seem like a curse. Here are some suggestions to get the most out of your Twitter usage: Twitters homepage can be cumbersome and relatively difficult to track conversations. The best and most valuable people to follow often update dozens of times a day, which can get overwhelming if accessing updates via text messages. Dedicated software helps rectify many of these issues, and can run in your computers background without an open internet window; some even have the capabilities of integrating with other social networks so that only a single log on is required.Check out TweetDeck or HootSuite; youll be glad you did. Rather than updating in real time, which can prove difficult at work, set aside some time each week to schedule your Tweets in advance. Two of the most commonly used programs for this are CoTweet and Social Oomph. Since youll probably be sharing links to interesting content and messaging related to job openings and your company (and because HR professionals love metrics), its a good idea to track traffic for your links. The easiest (free) site to do this is bit.ly, which automatically shrinks URLs to save characters. The single biggest thing you can do for your career

The single biggest thing you can do for your career The single biggest thing you can do for your career When you see an amazing design, an awesome product, a great work of art, listen to a moving piece of music, or hear about an amazing person who has achieved greatness in any field, don’t assume that the creation or success came about randomly or easily. It took commitment and consistency.By showing up, you stop waiting passively for inspiration and do your best work every day.You turn the act of doing your best work into a daily routine.A lot of people are afraid to make a commitment to show up. What if something really important comes up? What if I’m not motivated enough? What if I have nothing to say, share or do? If you want is do something worth paying attention to, create something that means to you, or become the best version of yourself, you have make the commit to a higher purpose. What is it that you want in life?Identify it and build the most important routine of your life to help you achieve it.Moving from 0 to 100 percent requires consistent habit.Showing up every day will set you up for long-term success. It will make you the money you need whilst you pursue an incredible life. It will build an audience who care about what you do, or write. It will solve most of your life and business problems. It will develop the tenacity/resilience you need need to thrive. Seth Godin explains, “Some people show up when they need something. Some people show up before they need something, knowing that it will pay off later, when they need something. And some people merely show up. Not needing anything, not in anticipation of needing something, but merely because they can.”Showing up every single day of your life is critical to success in every field of endeavor.Champions, legends, and icons show up every day, whether that occurs on the field, in a studio, on the court, or in the boardroom.Showing up can help you be one of them.Showing up every day, providing value, and showing your work is one of the best ways to build a lasting career.Quantity also breeds confidence. After a few years of showing up every day to do the work, you’ll have invaluable experience and a great portfolio to share. You’ll have a better story to tell about your work. There’s no substitute for showing up every day“Don’t ever, ever, believe anyone who tells you that you c an just get by, by doing the easiest thing possible. Because there’s always somebody behind you who really wants to do what you’re doing. And they’re going to work harder than you if you’re not working hard.” -  Maria BartiromoGreatness isn’t handed to anyone; it requires a lot of hard work. The best people in any field are those who devote the most hours to their crafts every day.In his book, “Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of NIKE” Phil Knight, said this about working hard to achieve your dream:“So that morning in 1962 I told myself: Let everyone else call your idea crazy … just keep going. Don’t stop. Don’t even think about stopping until you get there, and don’t give much thought to where “there” is. Whatever comes, just don’t stop.”Winston Churchill, one of the 20th century’s greatest orators, practiced his speeches compulsively.Vladimir Horowitz supposedly said, “If I don’t practice for a day, I know it. If I don’t practice for two days, my wife knows it.Michael Jordan practiced intensely beyond the already punishing team practices. The all-time-great football receiver Jerry Rice - passed up by 15 teams because they considered him too slow - practiced so hard that other players would get sick trying to keep up.Bill Gates saw the dawn of the PC and made a commitment put a computer on every desk.John D. Rockefeller, too, saw ahead when the world-changing new industry was oil, took advantage, and committed to making the most of it.Showing up every day is challenging, painful and uncomfortable. But it’s the only way to the top.In fact, a major key to success is to learn to enjoy challenging work and to enjoy working hard at it.For most people, work is hard enough without pushing even harder. Those extra steps are so difficult and painful they almost never get done. The good thing about working hard at your craft is that, it’s universal. It doesn’t matter what industry you’re in - hard work can be used to ac hieve positive long-term results regardless of the specifics. In the words of G. K. Nielson “Successful people are not gifted; they just work hard, then succeed on purpose.”“Work hard, and you will earn good rewards. Work smart, and you will earn great rewards. Work hard and work smart, and you will earn extraordinary rewards,” says Matshona Dhliwayo. You have probably heard this phrase a hundred times, “you have to work smart not hard to succeed”.Being smart is about making the right choices.Smart people move up the ladder real fast. But they also value the importance of showing up every day and getting real work done.Your idols, heroes made important and calculated choices every day before they reaped the rewards of success. As they reached the pinnacle of success, they grew more experienced, made less mistakes, improved their decision-making skills and made the most of selected opportunities. And this resulted in something that saved them a lot of time, effort and energy. You can only give anything your best shot and work hard towards your goals.Don’t see failure as an obstacle but be smart enough to learn from them. Jonah Engler once said, “There are no shortcuts to success - hard work is smart work.”Showing up even when you are not in the mood is the “how” to achieve greatnessDon’t wait for opportunities, create them. When you learn to embrace hard work instead of running from it, you gain the ability to execute on your big goals, no matter what it takes to achieve them. You blast through obstacles that stop others who have less resolve. But what is it that gets you to this point? What gets you to embrace hard work? A truly successful man will keep trying and keep struggling until he perfects his art.Thomas Edison failed approximately 10,000 times while he was working on the light bulb and yet he never dreamed of giving up - this is the hard work and the determination that marks a true success.Picasso was exceptionally prolific throughou t his long lifetime. The total number of artworks he produced has been estimated at 50,000, comprising 1,885 paintings; 1,228 sculptures; 2,880 ceramics, roughly 12,000 drawings, many thousands of prints, and numerous tapestries and rugs. And there are about 870 paintings by Vincent van Gogh existing today. His earliest date from 1881 and the latest from July, 1890.The greater your capacity for long-term commitment, the more rewards fall within your grasp. If you’ve chosen a significant purpose for your life, it’s going to require hard work to get there - any meaningful purpose will require hard work.If you are willing to show up every day, you will make incremental progress“The three great essentials to achieve anything worthwhile are, first, hard work; second, stick-to-itiveness; third, common sense.” -  Thomas EdisonThe power of progress is fundamental to human nature. Most people completely neglect progress because they’re so focused on achievement. If you need to write , the main thing you need to do is just to sit down in front of your text editor and write. It doesn’t even have to be a full page. Half a page or even less. Call that a success. What matters is that you make time to write, every day.Value progress, no matter how small.By showing up and working, you will make progress, every day.If getting to the top was easy, it wouldn’t be rare. Get over the initial hurdle by making that hurdle as low as possible, and then keep clearing really easy hurdles until you’re an unstoppable force of nature. That’s one way to approach putting in the hours to work on your life’s work. The importance of being consistent is a timeless truth.Rather than fight it, run with it and you will never be disappointed.Your life will reach a whole new level when you stop avoiding and fearing committing time and effort into your craft and simply surrender to it.Greatness and extraordinary success isn’t reserved for a preordained few.It is available to you and to everyone. If you are willing to put in the work, your efforts will pay off.Embrace and appreciate the processYou can easily attribute insane success to sheer luck. But make not mistake, every incredible person who has walked the earth had a story to tell. And in each case, you will find love of work, grit and insane focus on one thing they cared about. The ability to show up every day even when you are not motivated to learn, create, make something is the most valuable trait you need to be a professional. It doesn’t come easy but it’s a requirement to survive the process of creating something unique and remarkable.I can only become a better writer if I stick to a writing schedule and show up every day to share. It doesn’t have to be perfect. But it matters that I show up.Robert Greene, Author of Mastery once said, “If we follow the mastery process long enough, inspired by a profound interest and curiosity we cannot fail to achieve something exceptional.”Mastering anything usually involves exploration, adjustment, and improvisation. You can’t always know your destination in advance. And that’s okay. But be prepared for constant average work to get better at mastering the skill you have chosen to master. Give yourself permission to screw up and move on when things don’t go as plans.Genius can only show up in your work when you show up enough times to work through the average. That’s what kept Thomas Edison sane.He knew that every failure was a step closer to the right solution that will actually work. Edison went through thousands of prototypes before getting the electric light bulb right. He became famous for saying “ I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”You can’t create a masterpiece without creative mess. Whatever you intend to master now or in the future, you need to prepare yourself for the long haul. And that means hundreds of thousands of hours will be spent making mistakes and starting over. And that’s okay. You will discover what works for you in the process.Whatever it is, make it your own.The work of the best creators isn’t dependent on staying motivated but it follows a set of routines and patterns and a lot of hard work every day.If you are serious about honing in on your craft, you have to go through a volume of work, put in your best repetitions and show up over and over aga in. It’s the only way. Value the process. There are no shortcuts to mastery. See your projects, even finished ones, as work-in-progress. It rules out the need to aim for perfection. No single act will uncover more creative powers in you than forcing yourself today to start, do, create or make something you care about. And when you do, embrace the long process of mastery. One of the greatest impediments to creativity is impatience. It pays to value and embrace the creative process. It’s the only way to master any skill.ConclusionShowing up means being prepared mentally and physically to put in the work, regardless of outside factors or obstacles, including your own naysaying mind.It pays to show up.Execute that project. Finish that book. Start a side-hustle. Share your creative pursuit. Sweat over your projects when you don’t feel like it.Make progress, no matter how small! The daily consistency helps you improve your skills and develop muscle memory.Do everything you can and show up when it’s your turn. Give your ideas and your goals a fighting chance.Showing up every day is the best thing you can do for your career.Ready to start a life-changing habit?Ready to start a life-changing habit?I’m creating a habits mastery course to help you master the kaizen principles for starting and maintaining healthy habits.  Kaizen Habits  will teach you how to make any change in life, one small habit at a time.  Sign up to be notified when it launches. You can also subscribe to  Postanly Weekly  (my free weekly digest of the best posts about behavior change that affect health, wealth, and productivity). These are the most inappropriate things people say theyve seen or done at work

These are the most 'inappropriate' things people say they’ve seen or done at work These are the most 'inappropriate' things people say they’ve seen or done at work We may be in the throes of the post-Weinstein era, but while research has found that Americans have many different definitions of what’s considered sexual harassment at work, even newer findings from a recent NPR/Ipsos poll reveals the inappropriate things that people say they’ve witnessed or admitted to doing on the job.For example, while  93% of  respondents think “deliberate touching, leaning or cornering” is considered “inappropriate” behavior,  35% say they’ve witnessed “deliberate touching, leaning or cornering,” and 5% admitted to doing it themselves. Here are some of the findings that stood out.Bad behavior people have seen or taken part in at workIn the survey of 1,130 adults in the U.S.,  39% said they have witnessed someone “spreading rumors about coworker’s sex life” and 6% said they had done so themselves. But while 97% of people think it’s “inappropriate” to do so, 3% surprisingly either think “it depends” on the situation or that it’s totally “appropriate.”A whopping 55% say they’ve seen someone “telling sexual stories or jokes,” 15% say they’ve done this themselves, and 91% of people think it’s “inappropriate.” A combined 9% of respondents have either said “it depends” or that it’s “appropriate.”While 48% of respondents say they’ve witnessed a coworker “standing close and brushing up against coworker” and 11% admitted to doing it themselves, a shocking 21% deemed such behavior “appropriate” or OK depending on the situation.Over half of respondents (58%) have witnessed someone calling a female colleague a “girl, babe, sweetie, etc.,” 12% have done so themselves and just 83% think it’s “inappropriate.”70% of millennial men: Calling female coworkers ‘girl,’ ‘babe,’ ‘sweetie,’ ‘honey’ not  inappropriateThe research found  that just 30% of men ages 18-34 think that “referring to an adult female coworker as girl, babe, sweetie, or honey” is classifie d as “always inappropriate,” compared to 51% of them ages 35-54 and 55% ages 55 and up.When it comes to how women feel about this behavior, 54% ages 18-34, 57% ages 35-54 and 69% ages 55 and up felt the same way.The findings also showed that just 51% of men ages 18-34 think it’s “always inappropriate” to have a conversation “about someone’s sexual preferences or history at work,” compared to 74% of men ages 35-54 and 77% ages 55 and up.Conversely, 72% of women 18-34 think it’s “always inappropriate” to do this, 83% of women ages 35-54 and 88+ of them ages 55 and up agree.

5 People You Forget to Thank in Your Job Search

5 People You Forget to Thank in Your Job Search 5 People You Forget to Thank in Your Job Search 8 Rarely is a job search a one-person mission. Successful job candidates know that it takes a steadfast team of cheerleaders and allied gatekeepers to earn interviews and job offers. Yet as you scurry from one closed door to the next opportunity, fixated on the next step forward, it’s easy to overlook the people standing behind you. But forgetting to thank these important players potentially weakens your professional connections. A thank you is much more than a business etiquette rule or an act of politeness. A thank you is an investment in your professional future. The people you go to now for recommendations, advice, or a second opinion may not open their door again in the future if their time and efforts go unacknowledged. Remember these five people you forget to thank in your job search: Job references: Former bosses and colleagues are taking time out to give you a glowing review. Take the time to thank them not only after the initial contact but also after the hiring process ends. In fact, The Emily Post Institute recommends sending two thank-you letters: one after you receive the reference and one after the interview verdict. Employee referrals: Employees who refer you to work at their particular company help you move along the hiring process 55 percent faster, according to recruiting platform Jobvite. Even if these connections rack up bonuses for referrals, they’re putting their reputation on the line to get you in the door. A thank you is in order. Resume aides: Your friend, family member, or colleague who acts as your spell checker, editor, and personal publicist deserves a huge thanks for making you look good on paper. If you want to keep this asset on board in the future, take the time to show your gratitude. Your network: Did a neighbor forward you a job lead? Did a LinkedIn connection get the word out about your job search? Did you email a friend for job advice? All of these people need recognition. This is how you nurture your network and stay top-of-mind for future opportunities. Hiring managers who didn’t offer a job: Sure, everyone knows thank-you letters are vital after interviews, but what about after job rejections? Follow up with the employer to thank them again for their time and to express interest in future opportunities. As a gracious candidate, not a scorned one, you impart a positive impression that may come in handy if you apply again later or encounter the interviewer at another company. One simple way to thank everyone on this list: handwritten thank-you notes. Thanking someone through social media or email is quick and easy, but no one places a tweet or email on their desk. A beautiful, thoughtful thank-you note on professional stationery makes a longer-lasting impact on the recipient. But you can make use of LinkedIn and email to stay in touch. Check in when you’ve had a work anniversary, to send holiday cards, or to shoot over a link to a great industry article. Readers, how has a thank-you note made a difference in your career? Your Resume Doesnt Need These 4 Things Anymore

Your Resume Doesnt Need These 4 Things Anymore Your Resume Doesnt Need These 4 Things Anymore 9Your resume should be a living, breathing document. And as such, not every section or piece of information you included on your resume last year, or five years ago, should still be there. To make sure your resume will stand out to employers for the great info it contains, and not for its outdated formatting or unnecessary information, here are four things you can leave off your resume. 1. An objective. This is the statement at the top of a resume that tells an employer what youre looking for, and about 10 years ago, it was everywhere, especially for entry-level job seekers or college students. But, no longer. Employers already know youre looking for their job, so an objective statement telling them that is unnecessary. Instead, use a well-written  Summary of Qualifications to introduce employers to your most relevant skills and experience and tell them why they need you, rather than why you need them. 2. Unrelated awards, hobbies, and interests. CEO Sara Sutton remembers years ago when she received a job seekers resume that mentioned his distinction as a pig wrestling champion. It was certainly interesting, but because it had nothing to do with the job he applied for, it was more of a distraction from his other qualifications than anything else. 3. Too much formatting. Keep your resume simple so recruiters can read it quickly and easily. Dont use bold, italics, and underlines all at once. Stick to one or two fonts, and if youre using more than one, be consistent in how you use each one, making sure they are complementary rather than clashing. Some modern resume formatting trends use colors, graphics, and charts, which are all useful if done well. Any formatting you use should help employers to see and remember your most important qualifications. 4. A list of tasks for  each job. Instead of telling employers what you did at your past jobs, tell them what you accomplished. What were the overarching results of your day-to-day tasks? If an employer is hiring you for a specific role, they probably understand what that role entails. Instead, employers want to know HOW you did what you did and WHY it made a difference to your previous employers. When youre starting a job search, one of the first things youll probably do is update your resume. But to be prepared for career opportunities anytime, try browsing your resume at least once or twice each year, making updates, adding accomplishments, and removing pieces that are no longer relevant to your professional story.
